Aquavit is the national drink of Norway as far as alcoholic beverages are concerned. The name "Aquavit" is derived from the Latin "Aqua Vitae" which means "the water of life". Originally it was used as medicine, and the spirit was said to cure all deseases and be an elixir of life.
The basis for the golden-yellow Aquavit is formed by an extremely pure potato spirit. The the right types of caraway seeds, coriander and aniseed are added as well as other top secret ingredients - and the stored in special oak casks.
In addition, the spirit needs lot of time and a master distiller. The maturing process is just as important to the manufacture of premium Aquavit as the destillation itself.
Linie Aquavit matures in oak casks in which Spanish Oloroso Sherry has already matured for 5-10 years. It's sent around the globe on a ship, gently cradled by the soft rocking movements of the ocean. The journey around the world perfects ehe famously unique taste of the aquavit. For more than 150 years now, neither the traditional recipe for the production of linie aquavit nor the manner of the maturing process has changed.
